Biking in Kenya and Tanzania

Biking from Nairobi in Kenya to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania on the Indian Ocean coast is, for anyone who loves to bike, the trip of a lifetime. All of the ridings is far from any busy roads or main tourist traffic routes and gives you the opportunity to really get out amongst it in rural Africa. The route takes in every scene imaginable—open savannah, desert at the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, mountain rainforest and tropical coastline. The riding terrain is all dirt roads, 4×4 tracks with a taste of singletrack, so manageable for anyone with a good fitness level. It’s better if you arrange it so that distances vary every day, with a couple of 80 and 100 km days leaving you feeling like you have achieved something, and some days just 30-60 km to allow time to take in the zebras, gazelle, and giraffe (just to name a few) grazing the plains, chat to the children, visit local families and schools, game drives in Amboseli National Park in Kenya and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, or to just relax and take in where you are and what you are really doing. The best way to do the trip is fully supported with a guide service there to carry your gear, provide refreshments and carry you when you feel like a break. The 4X4s which accompany you open out like a Swiss army knife when it comes time for dinner and your trip leaders change their helmets for cooking hats and rumble up a feed of wholesome cuisine from the freshest local produce under a cloudless African sky.
