You also need to know the dos and don’ts of driving in Kenya to avoid getting in trouble with the police or thugs.

1.     Find a Reliable Self-Drive Car Hire Company in Nairobi Kenya

1. Find a reliable self-drive car

There are a few self-drive companies in Kenya which offer excellent service and good 4×4 vehicles for self-drive. If you are planning to go off road in national parks, you should always use 4×4 vehicles as opposed to sedans and saloon cars. This is because of the fact that, even though most of the main Kenyan roads to national parks are tarmacked, the roads within parks are not. Small vehicles with low power and low ground clearance will not be a good idea in Kenyan parks.  The company should be registered and have experience in planning self-drive safaris.

2.     Explore Your Options For Self-Drive In Nairobi

2. Explore your self drive options in nairobi

You need to look at several options in regard to costs of hiring the vehicle, extra services offered and types of vehicles on offer. The few companies offering self-drive safaris in the country mainly have 4×4 land cruiser and land rover options. These are vehicles which are tropicalized and modified for the tough terrains in Kenyan national parks. While cost is a major factor to consider while hiring a self-drive vehicle in Nairobi, it is quality of the vehicles and their condition that matters most. You also need to know that the company has rescue services in the event you get stuck or your vehicle breakdown. It is also important to know that the company will also help you to hire other camping equipment like tents, sleeping bags, gas cookers, cutlery, among others. A few self-drive companies in Nairobi also offer to help you do the groceries shopping and even help you to do a budget for meals. In some cases, we can provide a chef or a chauffeur to accompany you for the tour. Find out every detail you need to know especially when it comes to the services offered by the self-drive outfitter in Nairobi.

3.     Hire a Reliable Self-Drive Vehicle for Your Kenya Safari

3. Hire a Reliable self-drive vehicle

The most important aspect of your self-drive safari is of course the condition of your vehicle and its ability to cover the whole of your planned itinerary without breakdowns. Most vehicles in Kenya are aged above 10 years but you can still get a very well maintained 4×4 vehicle for self-drive if you don’t mind the miles on its clock. The advantage with these cars is that they are usually highly modified for Kenyan roads including dual coil springs, double shock absorbers on each wheel, protected under carriage etc.

4.     Check Is the Car Is Road Worthy

4. Check if the self drive car is road worthy

To hire yourself drive vehicle, it would be a good idea to road test it for a day prior to the safari. Check out for engine power, any oil leaks and general condition of the vehicle. If your gut feeling tells you things can go wrong with a vehicle then most probably they will. You can also request for the servicing history of the vehicle to make sure that it’s on top condition.

5.     Check If the Car Hire Vehicle Has an Inspection Sticker

5. Check of the self drive vehicle has an inspection sticker

All vehicles beyond a certain weight must undergo an annual quality inspection by the government. The vehicle is issued with an inspection sticker which must be displayed at all times on the windscreen. Check if the vehicle has an inspection sticker since this is a requirement by law and you can get into problems with police if found without one. The inspection also guarantees you that the vehicle has been recently fully inspected for roadworthiness.

6.     Check If the Self-Drive Vehicle A Has an Insurance Cover

6. Check validity on the insurance sticker

The vehicle you intend to hire for yourself drive must have an insurance cover. Whether the insurance is third party or comprehensive is ok. It is a legal requirement that all vehicles must have insurance cover in Kenya as it is globally anyway. Check to see that the insurance sticker on the windscreen is valid, just in case they overlooked that important item. This is mostly to ensure you are not harassed by police by driving without a valid insurance cover.

7.     Discover What Is Required To Drive In Kenya as a Foreign Driving License Holder

7. Find out the driving requirements

In most cases you only need an international driving license to be able to drive on Kenyan roads. You can read up if there are any other requirements needed. For example, you should not drive a public service vehicle or PSV if you are not licensed locally to do so. So don’t hire a 9 seater tour van for self-drive if you don’t have a PSV license. If you need a tour van, then you may need to hire the services of a local tour driver as well especially if you have a group of more than 7. With the current covid19 social distancing requirements the maximum number allowed in a 4×4 land cruiser short chassis is 4. In case your group is larger; you may want to consider hiring a tour van inclusive of a driver. The point here being; it’s important to find out the local regulations on driving and passenger requirements from yourself drive firm in Nairobi.

8.     Discover What Is Included and Excluded In Self Drive Hire Price

8. Find out what is included and excluded in the hire

When hiring your self-drive vehicle in Nairobi you need to know what is included in the cost of the hire of the vehicle. For example most car hire firms only include the cost of hiring the vehicle only. Fuel, driver’s allowances and park fees are usually not included in the hire price. So it’s good to know what you are paying for and what extra items you may be required to plan for. For example drivers, fuel, park fees, camping fees, conservation fees, parking fees etc. Some self-drive companies will require you to leave a refundable security deposit which covers any vehicle damage that you may cause.

9.     Sign the self-drive vehicle Hire Contract in Nairobi Office

9. Sign the self drive vehicle contract

If you like the vehicle you are about to hire for the self-drive safari in Kenya, you can now sign the contract and make payment for the vehicle hire. They will need to take a photocopy of your driving license, ensure its valid and keep a copy. The company will also take a photocopy of your passport for the file and to have your details. The safari vehicle you have just hired will be made available to you on the day you need it and in a clean condition ready for the drive. Remember to fuel it within the city before departure as petrol stations can be far between out of town. You also need to fill up any extra storage tanks or jerricans just in case you ran out of fuel in the bush.

10. Explore Your Routes and Buy a Lonely Planet Guide in Nairobi

10. Explore your safari driving routes and map your itinerary

You need to explore your routes and if possible download the GPS route on your GPS Device or phone so that you avoid getting lost. The lonely planet Kenyan guide book is a very helpful and extremely detailed guide to self-drive in Kenya. Make sure you have mapped out all your routes and read more about the towns and parks to know where to get supplies, security ratings, road conditions and everything you need to know about the drive around Kenya. While this is the easy way to buy a package, it is also the most expensive. You can use this article to do your own research and find a local operator to book with hence saving hundreds of dollars.

For example, if you want to book a Masai Mara safari, you generally should;

  • Do your research
  • Use a local tour operator company
  • Check their tripadvisor reviews
  • Request for tailor made Itinerary
  • Bargain on the prices
  • Pay a down payment of not more than 40%
  • Request for proof of payments
  • Pay the Balance on tour cost

While this may look hard, its pretty easy to follow these steps and get a fairly priced local tour operator in Nairobi Kenya. Follow this step by step article and you may save some good money in booking your next tour to Masai Mara.

1.     Do your research

You will need to do some research for find a good local agent to book a Masai Mara camping safari with. A quick search online will give you a sample of good tour companies in Nairobi Kenya. Based on the prices, you can tell which company is making an effort to give you discounted rates. You can look for group joining safari packages so as to save money by sharing the vehicle.  You will find that many Nairobi tour companies offer daily departures from Nairobi. Depending on the number of days you want to go on safari, you will get a very good idea on what is the range between budget and pricy packages.

2.     Use a Local Tour Operator Company

Local tour operator prices generally tend to be cheaper than prices from foreign travel agents. The reason is simply the fact that, by the time packages get to the international agents, the prices will have been marked up at least twice. So you are likely to get better Masai Mara safari deals from local operators if you deal directly with them. You can get many of the local tour operators listed on Online Travel Agents (OTAs) websites like Safari bookings, Viator, Expedia among others. 3.     Check the Operator Tripadvisor Reviews

Trip advisor also provides a forum where travellers can ask questions to past visitors about a certain destination they want to visit. It’s a highly respected website in the travel industry. 4.     Request for a Tailor-Made Itinerary

Once you have selected the local tour company you want to work with, you can now request them for an itinerary based on your number of days available. Make sure to ask them to make a tailor made itinerary and not necessarily buy off the shelf from their website. Try and explain in great detail, what you are interested in terms of number of days of safari, places you are interested to visit or animals you would like to see. The tour operator will go to great lengths to try and make a perfect-fit itinerary for you. This tailor-made maasai mara itinerary will also depend on your group dynamics including age, family, lifestyle and interests. You will have a back and forth with the tour operator until you have an itinerary that suits your needs in price and places included.

5.     Bargain on the Prices

Local tour operators are usually fairly priced and you should be able to get a good deals when booking directly. However, you can always try to bargain for discounts on the quoted price especially if you feel your tour group is large enough to justify it. Most of the local Kenyan tour operators will be able to offer you a small discount especially for the lodge based safari packages to Masai Mara. However, masai mara budget tour packages are mostly fixed in price due to their already reduced pricing points. So unless you feel that a tour package is overpriced, the budget Masai Mara safari packages are usually take-as-is.

6.     Pay a Down Payment to the Safari

Once you have agreed on the safari itinerary content and prices with your tour outfitter, you can proceed to pay a down payment on the safari. In most cases, the safari operators in Nairobi will request you to pay 40% deposit on the tour and the balance at least 45 days to arrival date. This is more so important if you are booking within the peak season between July and October. During this peak season, rooms are scarce due to demand and you should make an effort to book your safari as early as possible. This will help the tour operator to secure your rooms in lodges well in advance.

7.     Request for Proof of Payments

Your local tour operator in Nairobi will furnish you with proof that your lodge has been booked. This will help you to know that some part of your safari has already been confirmed. Kindly note that any cancellation from this point onwards will come with cancellation fees. The hotels usually charge between 25% to 100% of any payments if your booking is cancelled anywhere between 45 days and a no show.

8.     Pay the Balance of Tour Cost

For bookings during peak season, make sure you have paid the balance of 60% of the tour cost at least 45-30 days before your arrival date. Most hotels insist that full payment of the booking should be done 45 days before arrival especially in the peak season. In case you are paying at last minute, 100% payment for the tour may be requested of you as a 1 off payment. Rooms are seriously scarce during the months of July to October and any chance you get to secure your masai mara accommodation should be taken as quickly as possible.

After a few days in this African paradise, you will surely leave with great memories!

Here are 4 highlights of the 8 Days Mt Kenya, Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara Safari

1. Mt Kenya National Park

The highest peaks of Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5188m) can only be reached by mountaineers with technical skills, but Point Lenana (4985m), the third-highest peak, can be reached by trekkers and is the usual goal for most mortals.
When the clouds part, the views are simply magnificent.

2. Samburu Game Reserve

Samburu Game reserve is located about 310 kms from Nairobi and about 5 hours drive from the City.
These game reserve is a gem on its own quite smaller than other game reserve covering only 104 km2 which means you don’t need to drive a long distance to spot those animals that you love.
Samburu Game reserve is a gem located about the 310 kms from Nairobi, Kenya. The departure for these day trip would have to be very early in the morning around 5 am as the drive is about 5 hours.
The drive will take you through the the Kenyan north with breathtaking terrains and early in the morning would be a perfect to take a few photos on your way there.
The most popular park in northern Kenya, Samburu’s dominant feature is the Ewaso Ngiro River, which slices through the otherwise bone-dry country.
The river acts as a magnet for thirsty animals, and large numbers of elephants, Grevy’s zebras, giraffes and lions gather along the riverbanks.

3. Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Orphanage and Ol Pejeta Conservancy

It’s the rhinos that form the centre piece of the conservancy effort here – its (at last count) 111 black rhinos form the largest population in East Africa. However, Ol Pejeta’s role in the wider ecosystem extends beyond its boundaries thanks to its partner agreements and wildlife corridors with other Laikipia ranches.

Ol Pejeta is also extremely active in local community projects including school infrastructure, health care and the provision of clean water.

4. Lake Nakuru National Park

The southern end of the lake is the best place to see wildlife. The forested area below Flamingo Hill is a favourite lion-spotting point – lionesses love to sleep in the trees – while leopards frequent the same area, and are also sometimes seen around the Makalia camp.

5. Masai Mara National Reserve

The world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve is a huge expanse of tawny, sunburnt grasslands pocked with acacia trees and river woodlands, and heaving with animals great and small.

Impressive at any time of year, it’s at its best between July and October when a million migrating wildebeest and tens of thousands of topis, zebras and other animals pour into the reserve from Tanzania in search of fresh grass.

It is, arguably, the most spectacular wildlife show on the planet and the one thing that no visitor to Kenya should consider missing.

Reliable rains and plentiful vegetation underpin this extraordinary ecosystem and the millions of herbivores it supports. Wildebeest, zebras, impalas, elands, reedbucks, waterbucks, black rhinos, elephants, Masai giraffes and several species of gazelle all call the Mara home.

Predators here include cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals, bat-eared foxes, caracals and the highest lion density in the world.

Here are 5 more tips for the best 3 Days kenya Camping safaris

  1. Use a local agent:  Local tour operators may help you get great prices for a 3 days Masai Mara camping safari on a budget. Foreign agent’s prices are usually higher.
  2. Join a Mara group tour: There are many safari companies in Nairobi that offer daily departures to Masai Mara. These Joining Nairobi tour companies will usually combine several people in an 8-seater tour van to share the cost and make it affordable.
  3. Choose a mid-range Maasai Mara camp: The basic tented camps tend to be abit basic but you can get great value in a mid-range tented camp as they are cleaner, have more facilities and greater food. Examples are Enkorok, Lenchada, Simba and Oryx among others. these are best for a budget 3 days masai mara camping safari.
  4. Include a Masai Village Tour: It is not enough to see the Masai Mara wildlife and miss out on the Masai people. Make sure to request for a trip to the Masai villages around the park where the Masai can show you their intriguing lifestyle. Learn how to dance the ‘Aduma’ Masai levitational jumping dance or how to make fire with two sticks.
  5. Best time to go to Maasai Mara: If you want to get the wildebeest migration at the Mara river crossing, you will need to go for a safari around between July and august. But the park is full of summer crowds as well and the prices are at their highest at that time. The best time to enjoy low prices and avoid the crowds is to go on the low season around March to May. This however is also the wet season and could complicate game drive at times but as I said the prices are very friendly.

There are many more highlights that you will experience including balloon safaris, walking safaris, birding walks and even a local marathon.

Your 3 days Masai Mara camping safari is full of many variations depending on your tastes.
