Aberdare national park is located in central Kenya and is a series of continuous massifs that straddle 3 counties. The mountain is surrounded by a rain forest which is protected as a national park to protect the animals within.

The aberdare is the main water tower of Kenya. Two of the main rivers of Kenya start from the aberdare, namely the Athi and tana rivers. the mountains have streams on the moorland with clear cool waters where trout is plentiful.

Aberdare ranges have the most dramatic waterfalls. The highest waterfall in Kenya, the Karuru falls is found in Aberdares including others like Gura, Chania and Thompson waterfalls. The moorland rivers form a great opportunity for fly fishing of trout.

The moorland rivers were stocked with trout in the 1940s by the British settlers and the populations of brown trout have thrived since. Stocks are however low and a catch of 3 -5 fish is considered good.

1 Day Fishing Trip to Aberdare Itinerary

6:00am: Our aberdare 1 day fishing trip departs with a pick up from your Nairobi hotel for aberdare national park.

9:00am: Gate formalities and entry into the aberdare national park. View the majestic green forest with moss covered trees dripping with morning dew. Its a wet and cool scene as you drive up to the moorland.

9:30am: Arrive at the Chania streams and try fishing with the rods provided. It helps to come with your own fishing gear due to personal preferences. (recommended to carry own fishing gear). Below the thundering Chania river falls marveling at the scenic views.

10:00am: Visit the Gura river and fish below the fall and cave .

11:30am: Visit the Karuru falls view point and fish for more trout as you see the majestic multi-step falls from the opposite cliff. Its a very scenic view from here watching the deep gorge below and the waterfalls falling into the abyss under your feet.

1:00pm: Enjoy a packed picnic lunch by the river as you watch the moorland glades. 

2:00pm: Continue fishing for trout in some of the other smaller rivers of the Aberdares.

3:00pm: Depart from the park with an enroute game drive. 

4:00pm: Exit from mutubio gate and drive back to Nairobi city.

6:30pm: Drop off in your Nairobi hotel for dinner and overnight.
